Is AliExpress Cycling Gear Actually Worth It?

Two years. Dozens of orders. More than a few disappointments — and a handful of genuine surprises. That is what this article is built on. I have been buying and testing AliExpress cycling gear since early 2023, and the honest answer to the title question is: it depends entirely on what you are buying.

The categories where AliExpress excels

Some product categories on AliExpress are genuinely excellent. Hard goods — things made from metal or carbon with relatively simple manufacturing requirements — often come from the same factories that supply name-brand components. The markup on branded cycling parts is enormous, and AliExpress lets you skip it.

  • Bottle cages — Carbon and aluminium cages are excellent value. A cage that costs €60 from a European brand is functionally identical to a €6 AliExpress version made in the same province.
  • Titanium hardware — Bolts, headset top caps, valve caps. Titanium is titanium. The material properties do not change based on who puts their logo on it.
  • Carbon saddles — Hit or miss depending on the specific seller, but the best ones I tested rival saddles costing four times as much.
  • Tools — Hex key sets, chain wear checkers, and bearing press kits from AliExpress are typically made in the same factories as Lifeline or Park Tool budget lines.

Where you need to be careful

Not everything is a win. Some categories carry real risks — either because the manufacturing tolerance matters a great deal, or because the quality difference between a good and bad product is genuinely dangerous.

  • Helmets — I tested three AliExpress helmets and documented the results on my channel. Two passed my informal assessment; one I would not wear again. Without a verified CE or CPSC certification sticker you can check, it is a gamble I would not take with my head.
  • Brake components — Pads, rotors, and hydraulic fittings from unknown sellers can be inconsistent. I stick to known brands for anything stopping-related.
  • Cycling apparel — Sizing is all over the place. Jerseys and bibs vary wildly between sellers. When it works, it is incredible value; when it does not, you have paid for something you will never wear.

My actual buying process

After two years of trial and error, I have developed a process that reduces bad purchases significantly:

  1. Check the seller's feedback score — anything below 96% warrants caution.
  2. Read the one-star reviews, not the five-star ones. The complaints tell you far more.
  3. Look for CE, EN, or other certifications on safety items, and verify they are genuine.
  4. Order from sellers who offer easy returns when trying apparel for the first time.
  5. Cross-reference products with what other cycling YouTubers and forum members have tested.

The bottom line

AliExpress is not a scam, and it is not a miracle. It is a marketplace — and like every marketplace, the quality of your experience depends entirely on how well you navigate it. For hard goods, tools, and accessories, I will continue buying from AliExpress without hesitation. For helmets and brake components, I stick to verified brands. For apparel, I know what works and I order it repeatedly from sellers I trust.

If you want to know exactly what I buy and what I recommend, the shop on this site is built entirely from products I have personally tested and would buy again.
